Welcome Spring 2008 LIB 100 Students!

Now that the first week of class is over and we have all had a chance to meet.  I want to welcome you to the information literacy weblog.  Here is where I will post supplementary material I think may be useful to know every Friday for the duration of the course.  In addition, I welcome any feedback and suggestions, comments, reflections or thoughts.  Simply reply to any post I make and the comment will appear on the weblog for all the class to see. Now, before I begin posting “the good stuff” I want to restate a few ground rules for the course. As we have already reviewed the syllabus I want to remind you of a few things. First, the room we hold class in is a safe space where you can come and learn and grow.  I will foster an environment where my students can express their thoughts and develop critical thinking skills that they will need in order to succeed.  I will always respect you and in return I expect the same.  This is a class where you will learn a specific set of skills.  In order for me to teach you these skills I need your undivided attention.  Talking to each other while I am speaking or when other students are speaking is prohibited. Finally, I will maintain a room which is quite and orderly.  No disruptions will be tolerated.  Class will always start on time and you are expected to be there every session. With that I look forward to an exciting semester.  Have a great weekend and I will see you next week!

Life Long Learning: LIB 100 Take Home Lesson

Filed under: Information Competence — Carla Jaszczerski @ 5:22 pm

Dear Fall 07 semester students:

The semester has ended.  This will be the last post for the Fall 2007 semester. For some it’s your last.   You will be taking what you learned here at ASA and entering the workforce.  While others an entire academic carrier awaits.   I find that now it’s time for the most important lesson of the course.

The main objective of this class has always been to equip you with the skills to be life long learners.  That means that you will always be able to figure out where to look in order to get answers and results for all of your needs.  This course has dealt with understanding bias, media consolidation, understanding our information rich environment, evaluating information for quality and knowing how to access data and technology in order to get at knowledge that will make your lives better.

As a last fare well, I wish to remind you that I will always be available to help you with your research and information needs.  Remember; your local libraries aim to serve you and your unique communities.  Even if you’ve lost a book or two, your public librarians maybe your greatest advocates.  All you need to do is ask.  With that, take great care, bueno suerte and fare well!

Yours

Professor J
